John C. Carmichael, Ph.D. Director of Bands Emeritus, University of South Florida

Dr. Carmichael retired from the University of South Florida in May 2018. He was designated a Professor Emeritus by the university’s administration shortly thereafter. He and his wife moved to Kansas City, MO. to be with their grandchildren, daughter Jessica, and son-in-law Adam Horner. Since moving to Kansas City, Dr. Carmichael formed Pinnacle Winds, a professional-level concert band, with the goal of becoming the first all-civilian, full-time, professional wind band in America this century (check heartofamericawinds.org). Pinnacle Winds gave its first concert on October 10, 2021, after being delayed well over one year by the Covid-19 virus. The second season was also delayed by Covid concerns. The first concert of the new season, entitled “A Season of Symphonies,” will occur on April 3, 2022. If you believe in the stated mission, please make a donation through Go Fund Me. Just look up the name of the ensemble, and you will find the FR campaign. It is hard to believe that any lover of the wind band’s repertoire, both established and emerging, would not support such an effort. We hope that at least a dozen such professional bands will become established in major, metropolitan areas sooner than later. Dr. Carmichael has stated that he does not care if he is the conductor of the first professional band this century, only that it is important that they exist like professional organizations exist for nearly every highly valued activity in America. It should be noted that most of the major countries in the world now are home to one or more professional wind bands. Costa Rica has seven. America has none in the civilian sector.
